This week’s top-selling albums on Billboard’s World Albums charts contains a Norse surprise: In the top ten we find “Skuggsjå”, spiritual music that brings you back to the Vikings deep inside the Norwegian fjords.
On March 12, Ivar Bjørnson (birth name Ivar Skontorp Peersen) from Enslaved and Einar Selvik from Wardruna released the musical piece “Skuggsjå.”
The duo writes on the project homepage:
Skuggsjá is a musical piece written by Ivar Bjørnson and Einar Selvik. Arranged to be performed by Enslaved and Wardruna and was originally initiated as a commissioned concert piece for the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution and premiered in September 2014 at the Eidsivablot festival, Eidsvoll where the constitution was written.
Wardruna, started by Einar “Kvitrafn” Selvik in 2003, along with Gaahl and Lindy Fay Hella, is a musical project based on Nordic spiritualism and the runes of the Elder Futhark.
Ivar Bjørnson is a composer and guitarist for the progressive black Viking metal band Enslaved.
The combination of Nordic spiritualism and progressive black Viking metal has turned into something quite unique:
