Just a short ferry ride from Oslo, you can experience the spectacular open-air opera “Elskovsdrikken” (The Elixir of Love) by Gaetano Donizetti at the bygone Oscarsborg Fortress.

In brief, the opera is about Nemorino who is in love with the beautiful Adina. Unfortunately, she is charmed by the newly arrived officer Belcore, and the two decide to marry. After drinking a little “elixir of love”, Nemorino starts planning how to win Adina’s hand before she marries Belcore.

The Elixir of Love is a wonderful mix of love, deception and despair. All mixed with a good dose of humor and wrapped with beautiful music.

Best Acoustics In Norway

Oscarsborg festning ElskovsoperaenThe Oscarsborg Fortress located in the Oslofjord has been open to the public all summer, and according to opera producer Anne Schinrud they can offer an exciting and alternative opera performance.

– Here you can feel free to come straight up from your boat, buy a beer and sit right down. We hope this can motivate people to become more interested in opera, she says.

Although the show takes place outdoors, none of the soloists requires microphones.

– This is definitely the best outdoor acoustics in Norway, says conductor Terje Boye Hansen. He has conducted every performance at Oscarsborg Fortress since the productions began in 1998.

A New Taste Of Love

The acclaimed Norwegian director (and Emmy-nominated actor) Stein Winge has extensive experience from international productions, but he loves to work at Oscarsborg.

– This is an absolutely wonderful place. This year’s performance is very special because of the exclusive acoustic, Winge says.

– Winge’s participation has definitely revolutionized the performance. No one has ever tasted such an elixir of love, an excited Schinrud said before the premiere.

The arena can take up to 1500 spectators.
