Sven Hennig-Olsen was an entrepreneur and an adventurer. In 1924, he started ice cream production in the ‘back room’ of a tobacco kiosk in the center of Kristiansand, Southern Norway The ice cream quickly became very popular in the community. From the very first day, his first priority was always producing the very best quality.
As early as 21 years old, Sven Hennig-Olsen went to America to seek his fortune. He ended up in Chicago where he learned the craft. After 3 years of training, he went home with ice cream recipes and production equipment.
The ice cream that was made at that time was very similar to today’s Crème, with lots of cream and other natural ingredients.
As the ice cream sales took over more and more of the total kiosk sales, production was stepped up. In the late fifties, when the home freezer was introduced, turnover from the ice cream sales increased so much that Hennig-Olsen Ice Cream built their own ice cream factory. In 1960 it was ready, located right down to the waterfront in Hannevika just outside Kristiansand.
Because of bad weather the first few summers, sales was not as good as expected. Revenues increased when the summers got warmer, and since then it has only gone one way. Today, Hennig-Olsen Ice Cream is the most modern ice cream factory in Norway, making ice cream in all shapes and sizes.
